The SD-3 series truly is a world-class sound quality woofer with low mounting depth, small box requirements, and a reasonable price.
The SD-3 12 reduces depth requirements by using an inverted rubber surround. This design saves about 1" of required depth in front of the speaker so you can mount it closer to another surface. With a mounting depth of only 5.0" to begin with -- requiring NO space in the back for venting (due to the solid pole) and a full 1" less of front depth than most other drivers it has a huge degree of mounting flexibility.
